• Welcome to The Best Weight Bench!

This site will provide you with valuable information on the best weight benches and also adjustable dumbbells in order to assist you in making the right decision.  When buying a weight bench there are several factors which can influence your decision, such as: Quality, Reviews, Price, Size, Usage and Features.  We provide guidance on what to look out for, check out our guide on finding the best weight bench.

The reason why we have also provided reviews on adjustable dumbbells and other related gym equipment such as olympic bars is because most people wouldn’t buy a weight bench without weights.  So if you’re looking to purchase a weight bench, you’re also very likely going to be looking for weights to go with it.  Having said that some people do already own a set of dumbbells or adjustable dumbbells with no weight bench!?  If this is the case then you are not making the most of your weights and more importantly you are limiting your own potential to grow and develop.

As well as weight bench reviews, you can expect comparison tables on various gym equipment on our site.  Below is a mini comparison table on the best weight benches, to see the full list click here.

If you’re going to be training from home, a weight bench in our opinion is a must have equipment.  There are plenty of exercises you can do on a weight bench to target various upper body muscles but more importantly the chest muscles (Pectorals).  The chest is the primary foundation to building other upper body muscles and you can’t build muscle if the foundation is weak!

There are many reasons why you might want a weight bench, I can’t list them all but the most common ones include:

    • To save money! The amount of money you would spend on an average gym membership in a year you could buy a weight bench with weights, and the equipment will still have resale value after a year of using them.
    • Not enough time to go to the gym.
    • Don’t like people at the gym!
    • Freedom to train from home whenever you want.

    Different Types Of Weight Benches

Choosing the best exercise bench for yourself really depends on what type of bench is the most suitable according to what you what to achieve from training.  Below we’ve explained the different types of weight benches:

    Flat Bench

Adidas Flat BenchA flat bench doesn’t really allow a wide range of exercises, as the bench is not adjustable and doesn’t tend to have any attachments.  The main exercises people usually use a flat bench for is dumbbell bench press, seated bicep curls, tricep dips and skullcrushers.

    Adjustable Bench

Also referred to as dumbbell benches.  This type of bench is the more popular choice as it comes in many Bowflex SelectTech Adjustable Bench Series 5.1forms of variation.  All adjustable benches can be adjusted to different positions, they can be adjusted to flat, incline, some will go to an upright 90 degree angle or close to a 90 degree angle and some will have a decline setting.

The weight equipment used for this type of bench are dumbbells, but the good thing is if you add a Squat Rack to any dumbbell bench then you can also do bench press and shoulder press exercises with an olympic bar, so you’re pretty much gaining the same benefit an olympic bench gives you.

Some adjustable benches will come with attachments or have purchasable attachments, this can really benefit your workout as it’ll allow you to train so many more muscle groups with different exercises.  Most people would choose either an adjustable weight bench or olympic bench, if you’re unsure then compare them against each other then this can hopefully decide which one is the best weight bench for you.

    Olympic Bench

An olympic bench is usually also adjustable and will have different incline settings.  A lot of these benches come with attachments as Phoenix 99226 Power Pro Olympic Benchstandard usually either a leg developer or preacher curl pad or both.  Some will also have a built in squat rack, so plenty of exercises to benefit from.

The Phoenix 99226 Power Pro comes with all of the above plus a lat tower where separate purchasable attachments can be used.

An Olympic Bar is used for your bench and shoulder press exercises and squats.  Check out our Best Olympic Weight Bench Reviews.

    Folding Weight Bench

A folding weight bench is pretty much the same as an adjustable weight bench but the difference is a folding weight Body Solid GFID225 bench can fold flat to be stored away in convenient places like under the bed.

The idea is that this type of weight bench is suitable for people who have limited space at home as it’s light and portable, but even if you have the available space don’t rule out the best folding weight benches as it is very well built and sturdy just like the top adjustable benches are.

    Abdominal Bench

Sometimes also referred to as a decline bench, abdominal benches are set at a steep decline position designed to work your abs.  Some are Universal Decline Benchadjustable to change the angle or the height, but most are generally fixed in a decline position to give you a wider range of motion when doing your abdominal exercises.

All abdominal benches will have a foot roller on the end to lock your feet in place when doing your exercises.  Some people even use this bench to do decline dumbbell bench press as the decline position on the adjustable benches is not usually that steep.

Best Weight Bench For Home Use

All of our weight bench reviews are for home use although some are built to commercial standard.  If you were planning to purchase any of the weight benches for commercial use then it may void the manufacturer’s warranty as it only tends to cover home use.

What To Look For When Buying The Best Exercise Bench

If you’ve decided what type of bench is the most suitable for your needs, then you’ll still need to check what the bench can offer.  Below we’ll go through the features to look out for, once you have a clearer idea of what you’re after, compare our top 10 best workout benches.

Squat stand – Only Olympic weight benches can have this feature, the stand where the bar racks onto may also be adjustable in height so you can use it as a squat stand as well.

Adjustable – Some weight benches can be adjusted to more positions, if the weight bench does adjust to a few different positions then this may make it easier for you when doing certain exercises.

Decline – Not all benches can adjust into a decline position, but the ones that do allow you to do additional exercises such as decline bench press.  If you wanted the decline position mainly for abs then it might be worth investing in an abdominal bench.

Standard attachments – Attachments which are included allows you to do a wider variety of exercises, having different types of exercises to work the same muscle groups is more beneficial.  If your muscles gets too use to the same exercises progression is likely to slow down as you need to change it up to shock your muscles.

Purchasable attachments – Being able to purchase additional attachments does mean you’ll have to spend extra money if you want the attachments but on the other hand, you’re getting more use out of your weight bench by increasing the number and variety of exercises you can use it for.

Folding – If you’re a bit limited on space then a folding weight bench may be a good option, these weight benches can easily fold up to be stored away when not in use.  Our best folding weight benches guide will breakdown the pros & cons of having one.

Dimensions – The last thing you want to do is end up choosing a bench you like but it’s too big for the spot where you were planning to place it.  If you’re on the bigger side whether it’s your weight or height then check to make sure the weight bench is big enough to support you.

Warranty – Buying a weight bench is for long term use for most people so because you pay quite a big upfront cost, you would want reassurance that you’ll get many years of use out of it.  Buying the cheapest weight bench may not necessarily be the best option if it only has say a 1 year warranty, a better weight bench may cost you a bit more but it may have say a 10 year warranty.

Having longer warranty cover will give you a peace of mind, this way you know the manufacturer will cover anything specified under their warranty should anything happen to the bench.

    Choose Your Weights

Most people would buy a combination of a weight bench with dumbbells or barbell weights unless you already own one or the other.  This is the reason why we also provide reviews on adjustable dumbbells as it’s commonly bought with a weight bench, we’ve created a comparison table of our top 5 best adjustable dumbbells so you can easily compare the different features.

Another popular choice people opt for is to purchase regular dumbbells with a weight bench, if you’re unable to decide which one to go for then we’ve also provided a guide “Adjustable Dumbbells vs Regular Dumbbells“, this guide will explain the pros and cons.

For those who prefer to use an Olympic weight bench then an Olympic bar with weight plates will probably be the most suitable.  This will also be more suitable to those who can bench a lot more, as with dumbbells you’re more limited to the maximum you can lift.
